How to Make Slime in 5 Easy Steps

Halloween is on its way, making now a great time to learn how to make slime! You can add little plastic googly eyes or bats to make a fun scary-season slime, or just make basic slime that your kids can play with any time of year. 

Clark Ruggeri, owner of Ink’d Art Studio in Northport, N.Y., shared with us his take on this gooey material, as well as five easy steps on how to make slime at home.

“If you want to entertain your kids for an hour at least, slime is a great activity,” Ruggeri said. “Not only does it help kids learn how to follow a recipe, but then they are able to get creative with the slime. One fun activity is to add little creatures, objects, glitter or letters to the slime to create a piece of art. You can also have a slime race using a homemade ramp.”

And now…how to make slime!

Here’s what you’ll need:

• 4 – 5 ounces (or one cup) of Elmer’s glue. This acts as the base for the slime. 
• 1 teaspoon of boric acid powder (also called borax). This is a binding agent that causes the slime to form when mixed with the glue. 
• 1/2 cup of water, which is needed to activate the boric acid.
• Food coloring (optional). For fun, add a few drops to color the slime. (Great for making holiday-themed slime!)
• 2 small containers. This is for mixing your ingredients.
• A mixing stick. A popsicle stick or spoon is needed for mixing.

Instructions:

1. Pour the glue into one container. If you’re using food coloring, add a few drops and mix in.
2. In the second container, dissolve the teaspoon of boric acid powder into 1/2 cup water. Mix well until fully dissolved.
3. Slowly mix the boric acid solution into the glue solution. Stir continuously for a few minutes.
4. Once combined, the mixture will transform into a sticky, stretchy slime! Knead with your hands to mix it fully.
5. Store slime in an airtight container when you’re not playing. It will last for weeks if sealed.
