Free Community Events for the Week of Juneteenth
The Hopkins Center for the Arts at Dartmouth College will hold a series of free community events from June 15th through July 20th in commemoration of Eric Garner’s passing. These events are in collaboration with 20+ civic partners in NYC and lead up to the New York premiere of Dartmouth’s original opera, The Ritual of Breath is the Rite to Resist.
The majority of these free events are anchored in Staten Island and uplift the artistic voices of the place where Eric Garner lived and passed. The events additionally will carry through the five boroughs of NYC.
Highlights include:
- That’s Right Open Mic Night (Friday, July 12) – Hosted at Hub17 in Staten Island featuring artists including poet Ellen T Dotts and rapper Westside Buddah.
- Arts & Hearts Wellness Festival (Saturday, July 13) – Staten Island-based healing practitioners provide a full weekend of yoga classes, African Dance, and a Black Women’s Healing Circle.
- Staten Island Artisan Market (Friday, July 19) – An open-air vendors market at Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park, featuring Black & Brown-owned businesses from Staten Island artisans and creatives.
Several NYC organizations are partners in these events including Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Staten Island Arts, Sing Harlem, Perelman Performing Arts Center, New York Theatre Workshop, New York Live Arts, Issue Project Room, and more.

All of these events lead up to The Ritual of Breath is the Rite to Resist, a creative act of resistance composed in response to the loss of Eric Garner. This opera combines elements of music, text, and creative visuals to present a call to justice. It premieres Friday, July 19, 2024, at 8:30 pm at Damrosch Park.
