With National Dog Day on Saturday, now is a great time to put a spotlight all things dog, especially those who live in shelters and rescues.
Dogs are wonderful animals, and they make great pets. But sadly, so many live in shelters and rescues and do not have forever homes. Even worse, many shelters and rescues are experiencing overflow issues when it comes to dogs and other pets including cats, rabbits and guinea pigs.
Looking at data from the non profit, Best Friends Animals Society, as of 2022, the number of pets—including dogs—that entered shelters nationally was 4.4 million, which is an increase of 1.6% over 2021.
It’s Not All Doom and Gloom: There Are Ways to Help Shelter Dogs Without Making the Commitment to Adopt
In recognition of National Dog Day this year, some families might be considering ways to help local pets in need. Even if you’re not ready to adopt, you can still support your local animal shelter by fostering, volunteering or donating.
“Each shelter may need help in different ways, which often includes everything from spending time with animals to assisting with laundry and administrative tasks, so it’s recommended to reach out to see what kind of support the staff are seeking,” Rena Lafaille, director of administration at the ASPCA Adoption Center, explained.
Even just spreading the word about dogs available for adoption on National Dog Day–or any day!–can make a huge difference in helping to alleviate the burden of overcrowded shelters. You can also donate items.
“Helping to spread the word about available animals on social media and to family and friends can also be a creative way to support animals in finding their eventual home,” Lafaille said. “If you have items to donate, first find out what your shelter or rescue needs most—it might be something obvious like pet food, but it also might include less expected items like towels and cleaning supplies.”
Psst…check out these local animal shelters and rescues that have dogs and other pets available for adoption.
National Dog Day and Every Day: How to Help Support the NYC Animal Care Centers (ACC)
Here are additional ways to help dogs and other animals who live in the ACC on Staten Island and throughout the city:
- Sign up for the ACC Newsletter. It’s called The Boroughbred Bulletin, and you’ll learn what’s new with ACC, including upcoming events, adoption promotions, new ways to help the homeless animals of NYC and more.
- Volunteer. If you have a passion for animals and are looking to make a difference ACC can use your help. The center has volunteer opportunities at the Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island and upcoming Queens Care Center. Opportunities include: Dog walking (experienced only), rabbit and guinea pig companions, building enrichment toys, teaching cats to high five, assisting the operations team and more. There are also shelter opportunities with the Outreach Team.
- Adopt. Looking for a friend who’s always excited to see you? Or maybe just someone to toss the old ball around? A boroughbred pup will always be at your side. (Except, of course, when the food is on the other side of the room!)
- Foster. Not ready to commit to a long term relationship with a furry friend? That’s ok: The shelter has many foster opportunities, too.
